Dactylonectria novozelandica is a soil-borne fungal pathogen responsible for significant root rot and vine decline in various woody plants. It belongs to the complex of species often associated with "Black Foot" disease, which poses a severe threat to both commercial vineyards and nursery operations worldwide.

The pathogen primarily attacks the root system and the base of the trunk. It enters through natural wounds, pruning cuts, or damage caused by soil pests. Once it colonizes the plant tissues, it causes necrosis and blocks the xylem, effectively restricting water and nutrient transport, which leads to the eventual collapse of the plant.

Key symptoms include weak shoot growth, interveinal chlorosis of the leaves, and sudden wilting during the growing season. Internally, the wood of the rootstock or trunk displays dark, necrotic lesions and brown vascular discoloration. If left untreated, these infections lead to stunted growth and progressive death of the vines.

Environmental conditions such as heavy, waterlogged soils and high humidity are ideal for the development and spread of Dactylonectria novozelandica. The pathogen survives in the soil as chlamydospores or within infected plant debris, making it a persistent and difficult threat to eradicate once a site becomes infested.

Management strategies focus on prevention and the maintenance of vine vigor, as curative measures for established infections are limited:

  • Sanitizing pruning tools regularly to prevent mechanical transmission.
