Dactylonectria torresensis is a significant soil-borne fungal pathogen belonging to the Nectriaceae family. It is recognized as a primary causative agent of black-foot disease and various root rot complexes, which are particularly detrimental to young grapevine plantations and nursery stock worldwide.

The pathogen targets the root systems of susceptible plants, primarily grapevines (Vitis vinifera). Once it gains entry into the host tissues, the fungus colonizes the root vasculature, leading to tissue degradation. This impairment of the root system severely restricts the uptake of water and vital nutrients, directly impacting plant health.

Symptoms of infection are frequently observed as a progressive decline in plant vigor. Infected plants often show stunting, leaf chlorosis, and wilting during periods of high environmental stress. Underground, the diagnostic features include brown-to-black necrotic lesions on the root cortex, eventually leading to root decay and total system failure.

The development of this disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly soil moisture levels and temperature. High soil moisture, coupled with poor drainage and mechanical stresses during planting, significantly increases the susceptibility of the plants to colonisation by Dactylonectria torresensis.

Management strategies for this pathogen must be preventative and integrated. Critical measures include using healthy, pathogen-free nursery stock and maintaining optimal soil conditions through proper tillage and drainage. Furthermore, the application of biological control agents and specialized chemical treatments during the propagation phase can help mitigate the impact of this devastating fungus.
