The causative agent of the disease is a sac fungus that produces small, distinct fruiting bodies known as apothecia. Infection occurs when ascospores land on the surface of the plant, germinating and invading the host tissue via stomata or wounds. The disease type is primarily characterized by necrotic spots, which inhibit the nutrient transport within the infected leaves or stems.

The host range is broad, affecting both wild plants and cultivated crops in various environmental conditions. Symptoms typically manifest as dark, clustered spots on the epidermis. Over time, these spots can lead to localized tissue death, and under magnification, the characteristic fruiting bodies of the fungus may appear as tiny dark dots within the necrotic lesions.

Development and spread are heavily dependent on moisture and humidity levels. High humidity and cool-to-moderate temperatures provide the optimal environment for spore production and dispersal. Wind and splash-dispersed rain are the primary vectors for transmission. Dense canopy growth can create microclimates that trap moisture, significantly increasing the rate of infection spreading across a field.

Protection strategies focus on cultural and chemical management. Reducing the fungal inoculum by removing crop debris at the end of the season is crucial. Providing adequate airflow through proper spacing and pruning reduces the humidity within the plant canopy, making it less favorable for fungal growth. In cases of significant infestation, chemical fungicides should be applied following local agronomic guidelines.
