Dactylosporaceae is a family of ascomycetous fungi that encompasses various species capable of causing diseases in plant tissues. In agricultural practice, these fungi act as necrotrophic or hemi-biotrophic pathogens, significantly impacting the health and productivity of infected woody and herbaceous plants.
The disease mechanism primarily involves the colonization of plant tissue, leading to necrosis. The pathogen thrives by breaking down the physical barriers of the host, utilizing specific enzymes to degrade lignin and cellulose, which compromises the structural integrity and vascular function of the stem or trunk.
A wide range of crops is susceptible to Dactylosporaceae, with particular prevalence in orchards and nurseries. Infection is often facilitated by mechanical wounds, frost damage, or insect activity, which provide entry points for the fungal spores to germinate and colonize the internal host tissues.
Symptomatology typically includes discolored patches on the bark, sunken cankers, and localized tissue dieback.
