Description
Daedalea is a genus of bracket fungi within the family Fomitopsidaceae that act as destructive pathogens. These fungi are primary agents of brown rot, a type of wood decay where the fungus selectively decomposes cellulose and hemicellulose, significantly compromising the structural integrity of the host plant.
This fungus typically affects deciduous tree species, including oaks, birches, and various fruit-bearing trees. The infection often starts through entry points such as broken branches, frost cracks, or wounds inflicted by agricultural tools. Once inside, the mycelium spreads systemically throughout the heartwood.
The most visible sign of infection is the presence of perennial fruiting bodies (conks) on the bark, characterized by a unique maze-like or gill-like pore surface. Internally, the wood becomes brittle, dark brown in color, and breaks into cube-like fragments, a hallmark process known as cubical brown rot.
Development and spread are favored by damp conditions and temperate climates. Spores are released from the fruiting bodies and dispersed by wind or insects to new hosts. The fungus thrives in neglected orchards or forests where dead wood is not properly cleared, providing a continuous source of inoculum for healthy trees.
Management strategies focus on prevention and sanitation to reduce the prevalence of the pathogen.
