Description
Oak Mazegill (lat. Daedalea quercina) is a wood-decay fungus of the order Polyporales known for causing significant brown rot in timber. As a decomposer, it primarily targets the cellulose components of wood, leaving the structure brittle and prone to structural failure.
The fungus predominantly affects oak trees, though it can also be found on other hardwood species such as beech, chestnut, and occasionally birch. It typically enters trees through wounds in the bark, areas damaged by environmental stressors, or improper pruning cuts where the heartwood is exposed.
Diagnostic characteristics of Daedalea quercina include its woody, perennial fruiting bodies with a distinctive labyrinthine or maze-like pore surface on the underside. Infected wood exhibits severe internal decay, darkening to a rich brown color. Over time, the wood loses its structural integrity, shrinking and cracking in a cubical pattern characteristic of brown cubical rot.
The development of the fungus is highly dependent on humidity and temperature. It thrives in shaded, moist environments where the decay of organic material is continuous. Spores are dispersed through the air and can colonize any exposed wood surface within a short period, especially in areas with poor ventilation or high levels of coarse woody debris.
Effective management requires rigorous sanitation and preventive silviculture. Key measures include:
- Removal of infected logs and dead standing trees to reduce inoculum sources.
- Protecting pruning wounds on living trees with fungicides or sealing agents.
- Ensuring proper forest hygiene to minimize the accumulation of dead wood.
- Regular monitoring of tree health to detect early signs of fungal fruiting bodies.
