Description
Blushing bracket (Latin: Daedaleopsis confragosa) is a wood-decaying fungus that acts as a pathogen for various deciduous tree species. Belonging to the family Polyporaceae, this fungus causes white rot in the wood, effectively breaking down the internal structure of trunks and branches by digesting lignin and cellulose.
This pathogen commonly attacks trees such as willow, birch, alder, and several orchard species, including apple and pear. It behaves as a facultative parasite, targeting weakened or damaged living trees, but it thrives significantly on decaying logs, stumps, and deadwood, where it can complete its full life cycle.
The primary symptom of an infestation is the emergence of bracket-shaped fruiting bodies on the bark. These are tough, leathery, and display a distinct maze-like, labyrinthine pore surface underneath. Infected wood undergoes a structural transformation, becoming light-colored, fibrous, and losing its load-bearing strength, which often leads to structural failure and windthrow.
The development and spread of Daedaleopsis confragosa are heavily influenced by high humidity levels and the presence of physical wounds or pruning scars on trees. The fungus disperses its basidiospores through air currents, allowing it to colonize new hosts throughout the growing season. Warm, moist conditions provide the ideal environment for the mycelium to penetrate deep into the woody tissues.
The negative impact of this fungus is the gradual decay of the host, which reduces tree longevity and creates hazards in managed forests and orchards. Preventive strategies include maintaining high standards of tree health, prompt removal of infected deadwood, proper wound management using sealing agents, and regular sanitary inspections to detect and remove fungal fruiting bodies before sporulation occurs.
