Daldinia concentrica, colloquially known as King Alfred's cake, is a species of fungus in the family Xylariaceae. While primarily recognized as a saprotrophic fungus that decomposes dead wood, it also acts as a pathogen on weakened or stressed deciduous trees, contributing to the development of soft rot within the timber.
This fungus predominantly colonizes various deciduous species, including ash, birch, alder, and beech trees. It infects trees through wounds in the bark, poorly executed pruning cuts, or damage caused by environmental factors such as severe weather or pests, allowing the mycelium to penetrate the host's structure.
The hallmark symptom of Daldinia concentrica is the appearance of distinct, hard, hemispherical fruiting bodies on the bark. These are coal-black and range from 2 to 8 cm in diameter. A cross-section of the fruiting body reveals a characteristic concentric, zoned internal structure, providing a reliable diagnostic feature for identification.
Environmental conditions that favor the spread of this pathogen include high humidity and moderate temperatures, which facilitate the maturation and release of spores. Trees with existing decay, mechanical injuries, or poor vigor are particularly susceptible to colonization, as the fungus quickly exploits the weakened plant tissues.
Management and prevention strategies include:
- Pruning and removing infected branches to reduce the spore load in the immediate area.
- Sealing large wounds or pruning cuts with specialized wound dressings to prevent pathogen entry.
- Enhancing tree vigor through proper watering, fertilization, and soil management to increase natural resistance.
