Daldinia eschscholzii is a type of ascomycetous fungus belonging to the Xylariaceae family. While primarily categorized as a saprotroph that decomposes dead wood, it can act as an opportunistic parasite on weakened or stressed trees. This fungus plays a significant role in the degradation of woody tissues in various broad-leaved trees globally, impacting both forest ecosystems and orchard management.
The pathogen, Daldinia eschscholzii, primarily attacks various deciduous tree species. It is frequently observed on economically important fruit trees and broad-leaved species in warm climates. The fungus typically enters the host through wounds, pruning cuts, or cracks in the bark caused by environmental stressors, initiating the colonization process within the vascular system and heartwood.
Symptoms are identified by the emergence of distinctive stromata (fruiting bodies) on the surface of the trunk or branches. These bodies are hemispherical to nearly spherical, initially reddish-brown and transitioning to coal-black as they mature. When cross-sectioned, they display a characteristic concentric zone pattern. Internally, the wood affected by the mycelium develops white rot, causing the woody structure to become brittle and eventually collapse.

Spore dissemination occurs primarily via wind and splashing rain, allowing the pathogen to spread efficiently between susceptible trees in moist and shaded environments.
