These fungi are obligate parasites that colonize the tissues of the host plant, deriving nutrients from living cells. Their complex life cycle allows them to persist in various environmental conditions, making them challenging to manage in certain agricultural settings.

The primary hosts for this pathogen include different species of bamboo and other woody or ornamental tropical plants. While Dasturella frequently occurs in wild populations, its impact becomes significantly more pronounced in nurseries or controlled environments where plant density is high and air circulation may be limited, providing optimal conditions for disease transmission.

Symptoms of Dasturella infection manifest as the development of sori or pustules on the leaf surface. These structures typically appear as small, elevated spots varying in color from yellow to dark brown. As the fungal infection matures, these pustules rupture, releasing masses of urediniospores that facilitate the rapid secondary spread of the disease to adjacent healthy foliage or neighboring plants.

The development and dissemination of the pathogen are highly dependent on favorable environmental factors, specifically high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. The presence of leaf wetness is a critical requirement for spore germination and successful penetration of the host cuticle. Consequently, weather patterns with frequent rain or high morning dew levels often trigger significant outbreaks of the disease.

The economic and biological impact of Dasturella is characterized by stunted growth, premature leaf senescence, and reduced overall plant vigor. In severe cases, the photosynthetic capacity of the host is severely compromised. Effective management strategies include maintaining proper spacing between plants to improve airflow, removing infected plant debris to reduce inoculum pressure, and applying targeted fungicides when environmental conditions are conducive to infection.
