Dasyscyphella is a genus of fungi within the order Helotiales that can manifest as a plant pathogen causing necrosis in woody plants. While many species of this genus are primarily saprotrophic, some act as opportunistic parasites, infecting weakened branches and stems of both coniferous and deciduous trees, leading to localized tissue death and bark lesions.
The causative agent involves the colonization of the host's cortical tissues by fungal mycelium. This type of disease is categorized as a bark necrosis, where the fungus penetrates the periderm and phloem. The resulting physiological disruption inhibits the transport of nutrients and water, eventually causing the dieback of distal branches or, in severe cases, the death of the entire host plant.
Various woody species are susceptible to Dasyscyphella infection. In agricultural and forestry contexts, it is frequently reported on conifers such as spruce, fir, and larch. The infection is particularly common in young stands or nurseries where plants are subjected to environmental stress or mechanical injuries, providing an entry point for the fungal spores to establish colonies.
The primary diagnostic symptoms include the emergence of small, hairy, cup-shaped apothecia on the surface of the bark, typically white or cream-colored. As the infection progresses, the bark develops sunken necrotic lesions, which may girdle the stem. Foliage beyond the lesion point typically exhibits signs of chlorosis or wilting due to the lack of physiological support from the main tree trunk.
Development and spread are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, specifically high humidity, frequent rainfall, and poor air circulation within the canopy. The spores are primarily dispersed via wind and rain splash. Management strategies focus on sanitation, including the pruning of infected wood and the destruction of colonized debris, alongside improved cultural practices that promote tree vigor and airflow to minimize microclimates favorable for fungal growth.
