The host range of this fungus includes several deciduous trees such as Alnus (alder) and Betula (birch). It thrives on branches that are already compromised by environmental stress, previous mechanical damage, or competition, effectively turning these weak points into sites for further colonization.
The primary symptom is the appearance of tiny, white, pubescent cup-shaped apothecia on the surface of the bark. These reproductive structures are clearly visible during wet periods and indicate that the fungus has successfully established its mycelium within the bark tissues, potentially leading to necrosis and tissue decay.
Development and spread are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures. The spores are primarily dispersed via wind and rain splashes, which allow the pathogen to land on fresh wounds, frost cracks, or improper pruning cuts, initiating new infection cycles.
Effective management focuses on preventive strategies rather than direct chemical control.
