Dasyscyphus canker is a fungal disease caused by species of the genus Dasyscyphus, most notably Dasyscyphus willkommii. This pathogen is a significant cause of canker formation on the stems and branches of coniferous trees, acting as a parasite that disrupts the cambium layer and vascular transport.

The disease primarily targets larch trees (Larix spp.), though it can affect other conifers under specific environmental conditions. It is particularly problematic in dense stands, plantations, and nursery environments where moisture levels remain high for extended periods, providing an ideal substrate for fungal growth.

Symptoms include sunken, elongated lesions on the bark, often accompanied by resin flow and the formation of a callus tissue ridge around the edges of the canker. During humid weather, the diagnostic feature of the disease becomes visible: small, cup-shaped apothecia with white or orange margins emerging from the bark of the affected area.

The spread of the fungus is facilitated by the release of spores during damp conditions. These spores are dispersed by wind and rain splash, entering the host through physical wounds, frost cracks, or sites damaged by insects. Trees weakened by poor soil conditions or mechanical injuries show the highest levels of susceptibility.

Managing Dasyscyphus canker requires a strict silvicultural approach. Pruning and removing infected branches are essential to reduce the inoculum density. Maintaining proper tree density to ensure adequate airflow and avoiding damage to the bark during thinning operations are critical preventive practices to maintain the long-term health of forest stands.
