Dasyscyphus pini (also known as Lachnellula pini) is a fungus that causes canker diseases on various pine species. This pathogen is a significant concern in forestry and plant nurseries, primarily targeting the bark of young branches and stems, which disrupts the tree's vascular system and leads to tissue necrosis.

The host range of this fungus includes various pine species, with a particular susceptibility observed in young stands and plantations. The disease is most damaging to saplings, where the tender bark does not provide a sufficient barrier against the encroaching mycelium, allowing the fungus to penetrate into the phloem and cambium layers effectively.

The primary symptoms of infection include localized depressed lesions or cankers on the bark of young twigs. As the infection progresses, the bark in these areas becomes necrotic and may split. A distinctive feature of the disease is the development of small, hairy, cup-shaped fruiting bodies, which appear in vibrant shades of orange or yellow on the surface of the affected bark.

The development and spread of Dasyscyphus pini are highly dependent on moisture levels and temperature. High humidity and poor air circulation within the canopy create ideal conditions for spore germination and colonization. Spores are primarily dispersed via wind and rain splashes, infecting healthy tissue through small wounds, cracks, or insect-damaged sites on the bark surface.

The impact of this disease can be severe, leading to reduced growth, dieback of branches, and in critical cases, the death of young trees. Effective management relies on strict sanitation, including the removal and destruction of infected branches to reduce spore inoculum. Improving stand hygiene, thinning overdense plantations to increase air movement, and avoiding mechanical damage to trees are essential preventative measures against this fungal pathogen.
