The disease primarily affects various species of the genus Eucalyptus. It is a major concern in commercial forestry plantations, where dense planting and environmental stress can create favorable conditions for the rapid transmission of the pathogen between trees.
Primary symptoms include the development of bark lesions, stem cankers, and sometimes cracking of the wood. As the disease progresses, infected trees exhibit crown thinning, leaf discoloration, and general dieback. Exudation of sap or resin at the infection sites is a common diagnostic feature.
The spread of the disease is highly correlated with environmental factors such as humidity and rainfall, which facilitate spore dispersal. Wounds caused by weather events, pruning, or insects serve as entry points for the fungal spores, allowing them to penetrate and colonize the inner bark and cambium layers.
