Davidsoniella virescens is a pathogenic fungus known primarily for causing vascular wilt in maple trees. Formerly classified under the genus Ceratocystis, this organism specializes in colonizing the xylem of host trees. The infection disrupts the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients, eventually leading to systemic decline and mortality if the disease is not managed in its early stages.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are sugar maples (Acer saccharum), though other maple species may also be susceptible. The fungus typically gains entry into the host through wounds in the bark caused by insects, storms, pruning, or logging activities. Once inside, the fungus spreads through the vascular system, often causing a distinctive greenish-olive sapstain on the inner wood.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the progressive wilting and browning of leaves, which often starts in the upper portions of the canopy. As the vascular blockage worsens, the leaves may curl and drop prematurely. In advanced stages, dieback of twigs and branches becomes visible, significantly thinning the tree's crown and weakening its overall structural integrity.

Spores can be disseminated through wind, rain splash, or through the movement of wood-boring insects that carry the pathogen from infected to healthy trees.
