Davisomycella ampla is a fungal pathogen that specifically infects the needles of various pine species. It belongs to the order Rhytismatales and is recognized as an agent of needle cast disease. The biology of the fungus involves the production of spores during humid periods. These spores are disseminated by wind or rain splash, landing on new needles where they germinate and colonize the host tissue. The mycelium then develops within the pine needles, slowly breaking down the photosynthetic tissue, which eventually leads to the characteristic symptoms.

The diagnostic features of the disease include chlorotic spots on the needles, which eventually turn brown or tan. A definitive identification can be made by observing the fruiting bodies (apothecia) of the fungus. These appear as distinct, dark, elongated lines or streaks running longitudinally along the needles, often appearing just before the needles turn completely brown and drop.
