This pathogen targets the needles of pine species, primarily causing premature senescence and abscission. The life cycle of this fungus involves the development of fruiting bodies directly on the infected needles.
The disease primarily affects the ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa), although it can impact other pine species in its native range. It is particularly problematic in nurseries and young plantations where high plant density and specific environmental conditions facilitate the rapid spread of fungal spores throughout the stands.
Symptoms initially appear as small yellow spots on the needles, which eventually enlarge and turn dark brown or black. A distinctive characteristic is the formation of narrow, elongated black fungal structures (apothecia) along the needle surface. As the infection progresses, the needles die prematurely, leading to significant thinning of the crown.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly prolonged periods of moisture and moderate temperatures.
