Description

Delicatula is a genus of basidiomycetous fungi that, while primarily saprotrophic, can behave as opportunistic pathogens in agricultural settings. These fungi specialize in decomposing organic matter but may compromise the health of living plants if the latter are already stressed by unfavorable environmental conditions or mechanical damage.

The pathogen spreads through basidiospores that colonize decaying plant material. As a pathogen, it primarily targets seedlings or lower leaves in direct contact with moist soil. The colonization process involves the rapid growth of hyphae that invade the cellular structure of the host, leading to physiological disruption and nutrient absorption inhibition.

Symptoms often manifest as water-soaked lesions or a fine, whitish mycelial mat at the base of the stem. As the disease progresses, tissues lose turgidity, turn brown or necrotic, and eventually rot. In high-humidity conditions, one might observe small, delicate fruiting bodies emerging from the affected necrotic plant tissues.

The development of Delicatula is heavily dependent on cool, damp environments. Factors such as poor air circulation in greenhouses, dense plant spacing, and the presence of abundant decaying crop debris are major contributors to the spread of the disease. It tends to thrive in environments where organic matter decomposition is stagnant.

Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical intervention. Farmers should prioritize the removal of infected debris and the optimization of soil drainage to prevent moisture accumulation. Preventive fungicides applied at the seedling stage, combined with balanced fertilization to boost plant immunity, are standard recommended practices.
