Description
Delitschia is a genus of fungi belonging to the class Dothideomycetes. While many species in this genus are coprophilous and thrive on the excrement of herbivores, some members exist as pathogens or saprophytes on the weakened tissues of various crops and wild plants. In agronomic practice, this genus is recognized as part of a fungal complex capable of infecting stems, leaves, and root systems when agricultural practices are neglected or environmental stress is present.
The disease is caused by ascomycete fungi of the Delitschia genus. The type of infection is typically characterized by surface necrosis or tissue degradation, especially under high humidity conditions. The fungus enters the epidermis through micro-cracks or wounds caused by pests, after which the mycelium begins to colonize the internal layers of the stem or leaf tissue, leading to gradual necrosis and death of the plant cells.
Affected crops include various cereals, vegetable plants, and woody vegetation that are under physiological stress. Symptoms often manifest as dark, almost black spots or the presence of small, dot-like fruiting bodies (perithecia) protruding on the surface of the damaged areas. Over time, the affected tissues turn grey, become brittle, and lose their biological function, significantly weakening the plant's structural integrity.
The development of the fungus is favored by high humidity, poor air circulation within the canopy, dense planting patterns, and temperature ranges between +18 and +25°C. The presence of free moisture on the leaf surface is a critical factor for spore germination. The spread of the infection occurs primarily via air currents, splashing rain, or the mechanical transfer of contaminated soil particles by agricultural machinery.
The harmfulness of Delitschia lies in the reduction of the plant's total photosynthetic surface, which leads to stunted growth and reduced crop quality. Prevention strategies include strictly adhering to crop rotation, ensuring regular sanitation to remove plant debris from the fields, and maintaining optimal spacing for proper ventilation. In cases of severe outbreaks, the application of broad-spectrum fungicides effective against ascomycetes is recommended for management.
