Delitschia didyma is a species of ascomycete fungus that primarily acts as a saprotroph on decomposing plant material. However, in agricultural systems, it is recognized as a potential pathogen that can colonize weakened cereal crops, utilizing organic matter as a medium for growth and subsequent reproduction.
The causative agent belongs to the phylum Ascomycota. As a plant-associated fungus, it targets the host plant by invading its tissues via stomata or epidermal wounds. While it often colonizes senescence tissues, under high infection pressure, it can impair the physiological functions of the living host, functioning as an opportunistic pathogen.
Crops most frequently affected include wheat and barley. The primary signs of infection include the appearance of tiny, dark-pigmented perithecia, which manifest as small black spots on stems, leaf sheaths, or foliage. As the disease progresses, these lesions can expand, causing tissue necrosis and premature senescence of the affected plant parts.
The development of Delitschia didyma is strongly correlated with environmental factors such as prolonged periods of high humidity, rainfall, and moderate temperatures. Spore dissemination is primarily driven by wind and water splash, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly across fields with high amounts of unmanaged crop residues.
The harmfulness of this fungus is associated with reduced photosynthetic efficiency, which leads to lower grain quality and yield loss. Effective management requires an integrated approach, including deep tillage to bury crop residues, strict crop rotation, and the application of chemical fungicides during the critical growth stages if disease symptoms are detected in the field.
