The Delitschiaceae family belongs to the order Pleosporales and is primarily recognized for its role in decomposition. These ascomycete fungi are often found on dung and decaying plant material, but under favorable conditions, they can opportunisticly infect plant tissues, leading to significant agricultural challenges.

The disease type is typically characterized by decay and necrotic tissue breakdown. The pathogens thrive in environments with high moisture and stagnant air, where their spores can germinate on plant surfaces. They utilize a sophisticated enzymatic system to break down cellulose, which destabilizes the structural integrity of the host plant.

Cereal crops, forage grasses, and various vegetables are susceptible to infection by these fungi. The damage is particularly severe during wet harvest seasons or in fields where crop residues are left on the soil surface, providing an ideal substrate for the fungus to complete its life cycle.

Symptoms are identified by the presence of small, dark, flask-shaped structures known as perithecia appearing on leaves, stalks, and stems. These structures are often visible to the naked eye. Infected tissue becomes brittle, shows signs of discoloration, and eventually collapses due to advanced enzymatic degradation.

Effective management focuses on limiting moisture and reducing the inoculum source. Key practices include deep tillage to bury residues, balanced fertilization to improve plant resistance, and proper drainage. In severe cases, chemical fungicide applications targeted at the specific growth stage of the fungus are necessary to protect the yield.
