The fungus Dendrostoma leiphaemia is a destructive ascomycete pathogen responsible for causing necrotic bark lesions in oak trees. The primary host for this pathogen is the oak genus, particularly Quercus robur. The fungus acts as a opportunistic parasite, colonizing the tree bark through wounds caused by abiotic factors such as drought, frost, or mechanical damage, eventually penetrating the cambium and underlying xylem tissue.
The clinical symptoms begin with the appearance of localized, discolored, and slightly depressed necrotic lesions on the bark.
