Dendryphiella is a genus of imperfect fungi known to cause specific lesions on plant tissues. The causative agents belong to the class Hyphomycetes. While these fungi often lead a saprotrophic or weakly parasitic existence, they can become aggressive pathogens when host plants are weakened by environmental stress or poor growing conditions.
The primary hosts affected by Dendryphiella include various ornamental species, certain vegetable crops, and even marine plants or algae in aquatic environments. The pathogen typically targets the aerial parts of the plants, particularly those that have suffered mechanical injuries or physiological stress caused by fluctuations in irrigation or humidity levels.
Symptoms of the infection typically appear as dark brown or black necrotic spots, often irregular in shape, that expand rapidly across the leaf blade. As the infection progresses, a light-colored fungal bloom or spore mass may develop in the center of these lesions. In severe cases, the disease results in extensive leaf necrosis, premature abscission, and significant inhibition of vegetative growth.
Disease development is highly dependent on high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus spreads via conidia, which are easily transported by wind currents, rain splashes, or during routine horticultural maintenance. Poor air circulation within dense canopies and prolonged moisture on leaf surfaces are the primary drivers that facilitate the rapid colonization of adjacent plants.
Effective management requires an integrated strategy, starting with the selection of high-quality, pathogen-free planting stock and optimal spacing to ensure adequate ventilation. Regular sanitation, including the removal and destruction of infected plant debris, is crucial. For large-scale outbreaks, the application of copper-based fungicides or systemic triazole-based treatments is recommended to protect healthy tissues and halt the spread of the pathogen.
