The fungus is characterized by the production of conidia on distinct denticles (small projections), which is the defining taxonomic feature of the genus and explains its name.
These fungi typically colonize the foliage of plants, including various legumes and woody ornamental species. The infection process begins when fungal spores land on moist leaf surfaces and germinate, penetrating the leaf tissue through natural openings or small wounds, leading to local necrosis of the plant cells.
Symptoms usually manifest as small, chlorotic spots that later turn necrotic, frequently showing concentric rings or irregular borders. As the infection progresses, the center of these lesions often develops a dusty or velvety texture, representing the sporulation structures of the fungus, which are easily spread by rain splash or wind currents to neighboring plants.
The development of the disease is heavily dependent on favorable climatic conditions, specifically high relative humidity and temperatures ranging from moderate to warm. Environments with stagnant air, such as dense plant canopy or greenhouses with poor ventilation, are particularly susceptible to rapid outbreaks and severe secondary infections.
