Description
It is important to clarify that Dermatocarpon is a genus of lichens, not a pathogenic organism that causes plant diseases. Lichens are epiphytes that use tree bark or rocks merely as a substrate for attachment. They do not penetrate the living tissue of the tree, nor do they derive nutrients from the plant, making them biologically distinct from parasitic fungi or bacteria.
These lichens are commonly found on the trunks of older fruit and ornamental trees. In an agronomic context, the presence of Dermatocarpon is often considered a sign of a tree's slow growth or an environment with high ambient humidity. It frequently indicates that the tree canopy has become too dense and lacks sufficient airflow or sunlight exposure, which is necessary for the tree's overall vigor.
The visible symptoms include the appearance of scale-like or crustose thalli of various shades on the bark surface. Unlike fungal pathogens, they do not cause necrosis, leaf spots, or tissue rot. However, a significant accumulation of lichens can create a micro-habitat for various pests and may physically interfere with the bark's normal gas exchange processes, especially on weakened trees.
The conditions favoring the development and spread of Dermatocarpon include high moisture levels, low light conditions within the canopy, and the aging of the tree bark. Because these organisms are not parasitic, they do not directly reduce crop yield, but their excessive growth serves as a bio-indicator that the orchard might require better maintenance practices to ensure optimal tree health.
Protective measures do not involve the use of fungicides, as they are ineffective against lichens. Instead, management focuses on cultural practices:
- regular pruning to improve canopy aeration and light penetration;
- mechanical cleaning of bark with soft brushes during humid weather;
- whitewashing tree trunks with lime to improve sanitation;
- promoting vigorous tree growth through proper fertilization and irrigation.
