The Ringless honey fungus (Desarmillaria tabescens) is a significant plant pathogen that causes white root rot in many species of trees and shrubs. Unlike other honey fungus species, it lacks a ring on the stalk and is known for its aggressive nature as a parasite that kills host tissues primarily in the root and collar zones.
This pathogen affects a wide range of host plants, including various fruit trees, hardwoods, and even some ornamental shrubs. It typically spreads through direct root-to-root contact or via specialized structures known as rhizomorphs, which travel through the soil seeking new, susceptible hosts to colonize.
Early symptoms often involve a decline in foliage density, premature yellowing of leaves, and reduced annual growth. As the disease progresses, the tree may show signs of wilting. Beneath the bark at the base of the trunk, one can observe white, fan-shaped mats of mycelium, which are diagnostic indicators of this fungal infection.
The development of Desarmillaria tabescens is facilitated by environmental factors such as high soil moisture and the presence of buried infected wood, such as stumps or root fragments. The fungus thrives in these micro-environments, utilizing the organic matter to build up inoculum levels before attacking living tree tissues.
Control strategies should focus on preventing the spread through sanitary practices, such as the removal of infected trees and their entire root systems. Maintaining good soil drainage and minimizing mechanical damage to trunks and roots are essential preventative measures. Biocontrol agents like Trichoderma species may also be used to improve soil health and suppress pathogen activity.
