Desmella is a genus of rust fungi belonging to the order Pucciniales, which are known to cause pathogenic infections on plants of the Marantaceae family. These fungi act as obligate parasites, meaning they depend entirely on the host plant's living tissues to obtain nutrients and complete their biological life cycle.
The disease is caused by microscopic fungal organisms that primarily target the foliage. The life cycle involves the production of spores, which act as the primary dispersal units. These spores are easily transmitted via air currents, splashing water during irrigation, or contaminated gardening tools, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly within a crop.
Clinical signs of the infection typically appear as small pustules on the underside of the leaves. As the fungus matures, these spots turn into clusters of spores, often yellowish or brownish in color. The presence of these lesions disrupts the leaf surface, leading to yellowing, browning, and eventual premature senescence of the foliage.
Development and dissemination of the pathogen are highly favored by high humidity and warm temperatures. Poor ventilation in greenhouses and dense plant spacing create a microclimate where moisture persists on leaf surfaces, providing the ideal conditions for spore germination and the subsequent colonization of host tissues.
