Description
Diachora leaf spot, caused by the fungus Diachora onobrychidis, is a significant phytopathological issue affecting sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia). This ascomycete fungus specifically targets this forage legume, leading to reduced foliage quality and overall crop yield degradation.
The pathogen completes its life cycle by overwintering in the form of stromata on infected plant debris left in the field after harvest. As temperatures rise and humidity increases in the spring, the fungus matures, releasing spores that serve as the primary inoculum for the next generation of sainfoin growth.
The disease is characterized by the appearance of dark, often black, spots on the leaves and stems. As the infection progresses, these lesions merge, covering larger areas of the plant surface. This tissue death eventually results in premature yellowing and significant defoliation, which hampers the plant's photosynthetic efficiency.
The spread of Diachora onobrychidis is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high moisture levels and warm temperatures. Wind and splashing rain are the primary mechanisms for spore dispersal across the field. Stagnant air in overly dense crop stands can create a microclimate that accelerates the progression of the fungal infection.
Economic damage includes decreased tonnage of forage and a loss of nutritional density, as diseased foliage loses its palatability and protein content. Effective management and prevention strategies include the following steps:
