Description

Dialonectria is a genus of fungi belonging to the family Nectriaceae, primarily known as plant pathogens that cause necrotic and canker diseases in various trees, shrubs, and woody plants. These fungi invade the living tissue of the host, leading to localized tissue death and structural compromise of the plant's vascular system.

The disease is classified as a type of bark and wood necrosis. The pathogen typically enters through wounds, pruning cuts, or frost cracks. Once established, the mycelium spreads within the inner bark and cambium, effectively disrupting the flow of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to the death of branches or the entire plant.

A wide range of cultivated and wild species can be affected, with woody crops in orchards and nurseries being particularly susceptible. Environmental stress, such as drought, nutrient deficiency, or improper site conditions, often serves as a precursor to a severe Dialonectria outbreak by lowering the plant's natural defense mechanisms.

Symptoms of the infection include the formation of discolored, sunken areas on the bark, which later develop into distinct cankers or deep fissures. During periods of high humidity, tiny reddish or orange perithecia (fruiting bodies) may emerge from the infected bark, serving as a diagnostic sign for the presence of the pathogen.

Management and prevention require an integrated approach. Essential practices include the removal of infected plant material, the application of wound dressings to prevent pathogen entry, and the use of copper-based fungicides as a preventative spray during the dormant season. Improving general tree vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation is also critical.
