Phomopsis is a destructive fungal disease caused by species of the genus Diaporthe (anamorph stage: Phomopsis). This pathogen affects the vascular tissues and stems of various crops, leading to severe necrosis and systemic weakness. The fungus is highly persistent and can survive for several seasons in soil, crop residues, and contaminated seeds, making it a difficult pathogen to eradicate once established.
Affected crops and economic impact
The disease affects a wide range of important crops, including sunflowers, soybeans, grapes, and various fruit trees. It is particularly devastating in sunflower production, where it causes stem blight, premature wilting, and poor seed filling. The economic losses can be immense, resulting in significant yield reduction, lower oil content, and degradation of seed quality, often rendering the harvest unsuitable for commercial processing.
Symptoms and signs
Symptoms usually start as small, angular, dark-colored spots on the leaves, which then expand along the petioles to the stem. The affected stem tissue becomes soft, discolored, and weak, leading to lodging and snapping during windstorms. If a diseased stem is cut open, internal pith degradation and browning of the vascular tissues are typically observed, which directly interrupts the plant's nutrient and water transport.
Development and spread
The disease thrives in warm and humid conditions, with optimal development occurring between +20°C and +25°C. The fungus spreads through asexual spores (conidia) which are disseminated by wind, splashing rain, and insect activity. Plants that are already stressed by nutrient deficiencies, drought, or insect damage are significantly more susceptible to infection, allowing the pathogen to colonize the crop rapidly under favorable weather.
Control and prevention
Effective management of Phomopsis requires an integrated strategy:
- Implementing a long-term crop rotation to break the pathogen's infection cycle.
- Using high-quality seeds treated with systemic fungicides.
- Deep tillage to bury crop residues, which act as the primary inoculum source.
- Applying foliar fungicides at critical growth stages, especially during rapid stem elongation.
- Maintaining healthy field conditions through balanced fertilization and robust pest management programs.
