The causative agent of this disease is the ascomycete fungus Diaporthe betulicola. It belongs to the Sordariomycetes class and is recognized as a specialized pathogen responsible for necrotic and canker diseases in woody species, particularly birches. The disease is categorized as a bark and cambium necrosis that leads to the gradual dieback of twigs and stems.

The primary host for this fungus is the birch tree (genus Betula). The pathogen typically targets weakened trees in forests, parks, and nurseries. The fungus primarily invades plant tissues through existing mechanical wounds, frost cracks, or branch pruning scars, initiating mycelial growth within the bark and cambium layers of the host plant.

Symptoms appear as localized necrotic lesions on the bark, which eventually darken and become depressed. These lesions often girdle the affected branch or stem, disrupting the transport of nutrients and water. As the disease progresses, small black fruiting bodies develop on the surface of the dead bark, which serve as the source of inoculum for further disease spread.
