Diaporthe decedens is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Diaporthaceae family, known for causing dieback in various woody plants. It operates primarily as a necrotrophic or opportunistic parasite, invading host tissues that have been weakened by environmental stress, frost, or physical damage. The fungus is well-adapted to surviving within the host bark and xylem, allowing it to persist throughout the year.

The pathogen hosts a wide range of woody plants, with a notable presence on Corylus species (hazelnuts) and various broadleaf trees. Infection typically occurs through wounds such as pruning cuts, cracks in the bark caused by rapid temperature changes, or insect-induced damage. Once established, the mycelium colonizes the cambium, gradually restricting the vascular flow of the affected branch.

Symptoms of the infection include localized cortical necrosis, leading to sunken lesions, bark splitting, and eventual wilting of the distal parts of the shoots. On the dead bark, the fungus produces small, black, pinhead-sized fruiting bodies known as pycnidia or perithecia. These structures are diagnostic markers for the presence of the pathogen and release spores that perpetuate the infection cycle.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Diaporthe decedens. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures are ideal for spore germination and colonization. Poorly managed plantations with dense canopies and restricted airflow are particularly susceptible to outbreaks, as these conditions provide a moist microclimate that favors fungal growth.
