Diaporthe fukushii is a fungal pathogen responsible for Phomopsis disease, also known as black spot, which specifically affects pear trees, particularly the Japanese pear varieties. This disease is a significant concern for fruit growers due to its potential to reduce tree vigor and fruit quality.

The fungus attacks various parts of the pear tree, including leaves, twigs, and fruit. By infiltrating the plant tissues through natural openings like stomata or wounds caused by pruning or environmental damage, the pathogen establishes itself within the host and begins its destructive lifecycle.

Symptoms of the disease are characterized by small dark brown or black spots on the foliage, which can eventually merge and cause leaf drop.
