The fungus Diaporthe gardeniae (anamorph: Phomopsis gardeniae) is a serious pathogen primarily affecting gardenias. It belongs to a group of ascomycetes that incite stem canker and dieback in ornamental crops, disrupting the vascular system and structural integrity of the plant host.
The primary host for this pathogen is Gardenia jasminoides. The fungus is particularly opportunistic, commonly invading the plant through pruning wounds, graft unions, or mechanical injuries caused during propagation. Greenhouse environments with high plant density are especially conducive to the spread of this disease.
Symptoms typically include the formation of dark, water-soaked lesions that eventually turn brown or black. As the infection progresses, the tissues become sunken and necrotic, often leading to stem girdling and the subsequent wilting or death of the affected branches. Small black pycnidia (fruiting bodies) may be observed on the surface of the lesions.
Disease development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and prolonged moisture on plant surfaces. Temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C favor the rapid germination of fungal spores. Splashing water and contaminated gardening tools serve as the primary vectors for transmission within a nursery or greenhouse.
Economic impact includes significant loss of marketable plant material and reduced aesthetic value. Integrated management strategies are essential:
- Strict sanitation protocols including the removal and destruction of symptomatic plants.
- Disinfection of pruning tools using alcohol or bleach solutions.
- Ensuring proper spacing and airflow to reduce canopy humidity.
- Avoiding overhead irrigation to keep foliage and stems dry.
