Description

Phomopsis juniper blight is a severe fungal disease caused by the pathogen Diaporthe juniperivora. This fungus primarily attacks the young, succulent shoots of juniper plants, causing significant dieback and, if left untreated, the death of young plants or entire branches of mature specimens.

The disease affects various species of the Juniperus genus, such as Juniperus virginiana and Juniperus squamata. While it is particularly problematic in nurseries due to dense planting conditions and high humidity, it is also a common concern in landscapes where susceptible cultivars are planted without proper spacing.

Initial symptoms include the yellowing and subsequent browning of new shoots. As the infection progresses, small cankers form on the bark, cutting off the supply of water and nutrients to the tips, causing them to wilt, droop, and turn gray. During wet weather, minute black fruiting bodies called pycnidia appear on the lesions, releasing infectious spores.

The fungus thrives in conditions of high humidity, rainfall, and moderate temperatures. The spores are primarily dispersed by splashing water from rain or overhead irrigation, landing on new growth where they germinate and enter the tissue. Wounds caused by insects or mechanical damage further facilitate the entry of the pathogen into the host.

Management of the disease requires a rigorous integrated pest management strategy. This includes regular pruning of infected branches during dry weather and ensuring adequate spacing between plants to promote air circulation. Chemical control using fungicides, particularly those applied during the active growth period, is crucial for protecting susceptible plants in high-risk areas.
