Diaporthe longicolla (formerly known as Phomopsis longicolla) is a destructive fungal pathogen responsible for Phomopsis seed decay and stem blight in soybeans. As a necrotrophic fungus, it colonizes plant tissues, leading to cell death and severe damage to the crop's vascular system. It is considered one of the most significant fungal diseases affecting soybean production worldwide.
The primary host for this fungus is the soybean plant, though it can survive on various crop residues. The pathogen is seed-borne and soil-borne, meaning that both infected seeds and leftover debris from previous harvests act as primary sources of infection in the field. This dual mode of transmission makes the disease particularly difficult to eradicate.
Symptoms of the disease usually appear late in the growing season. Early signs include dark, necrotic lesions on the lower stems that eventually girdle the plant, causing premature death. On the seeds, infection results in cracking, shriveling, and the presence of a white, chalky appearance. The presence of small, black structures called pycnidia on stems is a diagnostic indicator of the pathogen.
The development of Diaporthe longicolla is highly dependent on environmental conditions. Warm, moist weather during the reproductive stages of soybean development (R5-R7) significantly accelerates infection rates. High humidity and rainfall facilitate the dispersal of spores from crop residue onto healthy plant tissues, leading to rapid spread within a field.

Infected seeds exhibit significantly lower germination rates and vigor, which can lead to poor plant stands in the following season. Furthermore, grain contaminated by the fungus often faces quality downgrades, causing financial losses for producers.
