Description

The disease is caused by the pathogenic fungus Diaporthe rosiphthora. This organism acts as an opportunistic parasite, primarily targeting the woody stems and branches of rose bushes. The fungus infiltrates the plant's tissues, disrupting water and nutrient transport, which inevitably leads to localized necrosis and subsequent plant decline.

The primary host for this pathogen is the genus Rosa. While all rose varieties are susceptible, garden roses and those cultivated in high-density greenhouse conditions are most at risk. The pathogen is particularly dangerous because it can survive on dead plant debris, making it a persistent threat in garden environments where sanitation is neglected.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as dark, sunken lesions or cankers on the stems. As the disease progresses, the bark in these areas may split or show discoloration. During periods of high humidity, the fungus produces visible reproductive structures, appearing as small black pimples or dots on the surface of the lesions. Infected stems often wilt, and the foliage attached to them may exhibit chlorosis and leaf drop.

The development and spread of Diaporthe rosiphthora are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, specifically moisture and temperature. High humidity, heavy rainfall, and temperatures ranging between 18°C and 25°C favor spore production and dissemination. Spores are primarily spread by water splashing, wind, and contaminated tools used during pruning or other maintenance activities.

The damage caused by this pathogen includes severe dieback, reduced flowering capacity, and potential plant death if the canker girdles the main stem. Effective management relies on cultural practices, such as maintaining good airflow, pruning affected parts well below the lesion, and sterilizing tools with alcohol or bleach. Chemical control using fungicides should be part of a seasonal integrated pest management strategy.
