Phomopsis blight, caused by the fungus Diaporthe vexans (anamorph Phomopsis vexans), is a destructive plant disease primarily affecting eggplants worldwide. This pathogen is known for its ability to cause severe damage at all growth stages, significantly reducing crop yields and quality.

The fungus is a member of the Ascomycota division and specifically targets plants within the Solanaceae family. It is a persistent soil-borne and seed-borne pathogen, which allows it to survive in the field between seasons on infected plant debris, making it a recurring problem for producers.

Symptoms of the disease vary by the part of the plant affected. On seedlings, it typically manifests as damping-off or stem cankers. On leaves, the lesions appear as brown, circular, or irregular spots with distinct concentric rings. On the fruits, soft, dark, sunken spots develop, which eventually become covered with numerous black, pin-head-sized fruiting bodies known as pycnidia.

The development and spread of Diaporthe vexans are heavily dependent on environmental conditions. High humidity, heavy rainfall, and warm temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C are ideal for the rapid production and dissemination of fungal spores. Wind, splashing rain, and contaminated farming equipment facilitate the spread of the pathogen within the crop canopy.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key control measures include the use of disease-free certified seeds, hot water seed treatment, and long-term crop rotation to break the life cycle of the fungus. Additionally, the removal and destruction of crop residues after harvest and the timely application of approved chemical fungicides during the growing season are essential to prevent widespread outbreaks.
