Diatrype disciformis is a species of ascomycete fungus that primarily acts as a wood-decay pathogen. While it frequently colonizes dead organic matter as a saprophyte, it can become a pathogen on stressed or weakened deciduous trees, leading to the development of necrotic lesions on the bark and underlying sapwood.

This fungus is most commonly associated with beech (Fagus) and hornbeam (Carpinus) species. It utilizes its enzymes to break down lignin and cellulose within the wood, which can lead to the systemic decline of the tree if the infection spreads to the main trunk or structural limbs.

The primary diagnostic sign of the disease is the presence of small, dark, disc-shaped stromata erupting through the bark. These structures are often clustered and can be seen clearly on dead or dying branches, serving as visual evidence of the ongoing wood degradation process caused by the mycelium.
