Diatrype virescens is an ascomycete fungus belonging to the Diatrypaceae family, primarily known as a pathogen affecting the bark and wood of deciduous trees. While often classified as a saprotroph, it acts as a opportunistic pathogen, colonizing stressed or wounded wood surfaces in various forest ecosystems.
The primary hosts for this fungal infection include species of the Fagus genus (beech). The fungus predominantly targets trees that have already sustained damage from environmental factors such as severe weather, frost, or physical impacts, which compromise the tree's natural protective barriers and allow the mycelium to establish.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the appearance of distinct fungal stromata on the bark surface. These fruiting bodies are typically small and exhibit a green to olive-colored pigment, which eventually matures into dark brown or black.
