Description
Diatrypella quercina is a species of fungi within the family Diatrypaceae. It acts as a necrotrophic pathogen, primarily affecting various oak species. While often found on dead or dying branches, it can function as a parasite on weakened trees, leading to the development of necrotic lesions on the bark and underlying cambium tissue.
The primary hosts for this fungus are members of the Quercus genus, particularly the common oak. The pathogen colonizes the living tissues of the bark, disrupting the normal physiological processes of the tree. When infection becomes severe, it contributes significantly to branch dieback and overall tree decline.
The most distinctive symptom of infection is the appearance of numerous erumpent, black, cushion-shaped stromata on the surface of the bark. These structures eventually break through the epidermal layer as the fungus matures. Over time, the affected areas of the bark become sunken, brittle, and cracked, often leading to distinct necrotic patches.
The development of the disease is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moisture levels. The fungus spores are disseminated by rain splash and wind, typically colonizing trees through pruning wounds, frost cracks, or sites weakened by previous insect attacks. A high degree of canopy density can also create microclimates that favor fungal growth.
