Description
Dichotomophthoropsis nymphaearum is a pathogenic fungus that specifically targets aquatic plants, most notably water lilies (Nymphaea spp.). This fungus is the causative agent of a severe leaf spot disease that can significantly diminish the health and aesthetic value of ornamental water garden collections.
The host range is primarily limited to members of the Nymphaeaceae family. It is a persistent problem in botanical gardens, nurseries, and private ponds where dense cultivation of lilies creates a microclimate conducive to rapid fungal growth. The disease is particularly problematic during mid-summer months when environmental conditions are ideal for the pathogen.
Symptoms initially present as small, chlorotic spots on the leaf surface, which gradually expand and darken into distinct necrotic lesions. As the disease progresses, the centers of these spots may wither and drop out, creating a "shot-hole" effect. Under conditions of high humidity or poor airflow, a fuzzy, dark-colored spore mat often develops on the underside of the affected leaf tissue.
The development of the disease is heavily dictated by water temperature and the general sanitation of the aquatic environment. Dichotomophthoropsis nymphaearum thrives in warm, stagnant water. The pathogen survives the winter in dormant plant debris or within the sediment at the bottom of the pond, re-infecting new growth as soon as water temperatures rise in the spring.
