The causal agent of potato blackleg is the bacterium Dickeya solani, an aggressive pectolytic pathogen belonging to the Pectobacteriaceae family. It is a severe bacterial disease that attacks the plant's vascular system and soft tissues, causing rapid tissue degradation. This pathogen is highly virulent, representing one of the most critical threats to both commercial and seed potato production globally.

While potato is the primary host, the pathogen can infect a wide range of other plants, including various Solanaceae vegetable crops and several ornamental species. The bacterium can survive within infected tubers, crop debris in the soil, and on specific weed hosts, which significantly complicates integrated pest management strategies in the field.

Symptoms typically manifest as the blackening and softening of the lower stem, which becomes water-soaked and emits a foul odor. As the disease progresses, leaves turn yellow, curl along the midrib, and the plant's growth is stunted. Infected tubers develop pockets of wet rot that spread quickly, eventually transforming the internal tissues into a slimy, grayish-brown mass.

Disease development and spread are favored by high soil moisture, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures. The infection is primarily disseminated through contaminated seed tubers, agricultural machinery, insect vectors, and irrigation water. Under conditions of high humidity and poor soil aeration, the bacteria reproduce exponentially, leading to severe crop losses both in the field and during storage.

The impact of this disease includes not only individual plant mortality but also the widespread contamination of healthy tubers during harvesting and storage. Effective management relies heavily on preventative measures:

  • Utilizing certified, pathogen-free seed potatoes.
  • Practicing strict crop rotation schedules.
  • Implementing deep soil tillage to incorporate debris.
  • Disinfecting all agricultural tools, machinery, and storage facilities.
Since chemical treatments have limited efficacy against this pathogen, rigorous phytosanitary monitoring remains the primary strategy for control.
