Description

Dictyoarthrinium is a genus of imperfect fungi (anamorphic fungi) belonging to the order Pleosporales or related groups of hyphomycetes. In agricultural pathology, it is recognized as a causative agent of mold and secondary decay, primarily affecting plant tissues that are already weakened, senescent, or damaged by biotic and abiotic stressors.

This pathogen impacts a broad array of agricultural commodities, ranging from cereal crops to various legumes and forage plants. It is particularly problematic in seed production and grain storage, where it acts as a post-harvest pathogen if moisture levels exceed critical thresholds. Field-grown crops may also exhibit signs of infection under conditions of prolonged environmental stress.

The primary diagnostic symptoms of a Dictyoarthrinium infection include the development of dense, dark-brown or black velvet-like mycelial colonies on the surface of leaves, stems, or seeds. As the fungus progresses, it causes necrosis of the underlying tissue. The presence of these dark fruiting bodies (conidiophores) is a distinct characteristic that differentiates it from other common molds.

Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of Dictyoarthrinium development. The fungus thrives in high-humidity environments (above 80% relative humidity) combined with moderate to warm temperatures. It spreads efficiently through airborne conidia, which can travel significant distances, and survives adverse seasons as dormant mycelium or spores within infected plant debris remaining in the field.

The economic impact of this disease is observed primarily through reduced seed germination rates, crop discoloration, and overall loss of yield quality. Management and prevention are centered on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, including strict sanitation of fields to remove infected stubble, the use of certified healthy seeds, and the application of effective chemical seed treatments to prevent early-stage seedling blight.
