Description
The causal agent of this disease is the ascomycete fungus Didymella aurea. This pathogen causes distinctive necrotic spots on the foliage, disrupting the normal physiological processes of the affected plants. It is classified as a significant fungal disease, particularly problematic in nurseries and landscape plantations.
The primary host plants affected by this fungus include various species of conifers, such as thujas, junipers, and cypresses. The disease is frequently observed in young plantations or densely planted gardens where the airflow is restricted and the humidity remains high for prolonged periods.
Symptoms are identified by the appearance of golden-yellow or brown spots on needles and scales. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often turning dark brown or black as the tissue dies. Small black fruiting bodies known as pycnidia develop within the necrotic tissue, which are key diagnostic features for identifying the presence of Didymella aurea.
The development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high moisture and moderate temperatures. Spores are disseminated by wind and splashing water, landing on susceptible tissues during periods of rainfall. Overcrowding of plants significantly accelerates the spread of the pathogen by preventing the foliage from drying out quickly.
The impact of this disease is primarily aesthetic, leading to defoliation, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the death of young plants. Effective management strategies include:
