Didymella leaf spot, caused by the fungal pathogen Didymella chenopodii, is a common disease affecting members of the Amaranthaceae family, particularly plants within the Chenopodium genus. As an ascomycete fungus, it acts as a specialized parasite, targeting leaves and stems, which can severely compromise the plant's health and development.
The primary hosts include various species of goosefoot, such as cultivated quinoa and related wild weeds. These wild reservoirs play a significant role in the survival of the pathogen during the off-season, serving as a source of primary inoculum that can infect new crops during the growing cycle.
Symptoms of the disease initially appear as small discolored spots on the leaves.
