Description
The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Didymella coffeae-arabicae, which belongs to the Ascomycota phylum. It acts as a pathogenic organism that induces necrotic tissue decay on various parts of the coffee plant. As a fungal leaf spot disease, it poses a recurring challenge to agricultural productivity in regions with high humidity.
The primary host for this pathogen is Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica). The infection affects leaves, berries, and young stems, leading to severe physiological stress in the plant. When left untreated, the disease compromises the overall health of the coffee tree and leads to a significant reduction in the quantity and quality of the final harvest.
Symptoms are characterized by the appearance of dark, brown lesions on leaves that gradually enlarge and merge. These lesions often develop small, black fruiting bodies known as pycnidia. Affected berries may turn black or drop prematurely, directly impacting the marketable yield. Severe infections lead to extensive defoliation, weakening the tree's vigor.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and dispersal of the fungus. High relative humidity, persistent rainfall, and moderate temperatures (20–25°C) create an optimal climate for spore germination. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and contact with contaminated agricultural tools or clothing during harvest.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to plant health. Key preventive measures include regular pruning to improve air circulation within the canopy, strict sanitation practices to remove infected debris, and the application of copper-based or systemic fungicides during high-risk periods. Maintaining optimal planting density is also essential to reduce the humidity levels that favor fungal growth.
