Didymella stem blight is a destructive fungal infection caused by the pathogen Didymella dimorpha. This fungus is recognized as a significant threat to legume production, specifically targeting lupin crops and causing various necrotic lesions on vegetative and reproductive tissues.

The primary host for this pathogen is the lupin plant. The disease can affect the crop at any growth stage, significantly impacting seedling survival and the development of healthy pods. Because the pathogen can survive in soil and on debris, it represents a persistent challenge for continuous cropping systems.

Symptoms typically manifest as distinct dark brown or black lesions on stems, leaf petioles, and pods. As the infection progresses, these lesions expand, often leading to stem girdling and plant lodging. Tiny black structures known as pycnidia, which serve as spore-producing organs, are frequently visible within the necrotic tissue during humid conditions.

The development of the disease is heavily dictated by environmental factors, particularly high humidity, prolonged rainfall, and moderate temperatures. These conditions favor the production and dispersal of conidia. Dense planting patterns that restrict airflow can further create a microclimate conducive to rapid fungal colonization.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize the inoculum load. Key strategies include practicing strict crop rotation, ensuring the thorough incorporation of crop residues into the soil, and sourcing certified disease-free seeds. Preventive fungicide treatments may be necessary in high-risk areas to protect the crop during vulnerable growth stages.
