Description

The causal agent of this disease is the ascomycete fungus Didymella fuchsiae, which is classified as a pathogen primarily affecting ornamental plants. The disease is categorized as a specific type of leaf spot and stem necrosis, which causes serious physiological disturbances in the plant's development, leading to premature wilting.

The primary host plant is fuchsia (Fuchsia). The pathogen affects both indoor specimens and plants grown in open ground or greenhouses. Varieties grown in conditions of high humidity and poor ventilation are at the highest risk.

Symptoms of the disease manifest as the formation of brown or gray spots on the leaves and stems, which gradually enlarge. In the affected areas, tissues soften and die off, and under high humidity, small black dots known as pycnidia (the fungus's fruiting bodies) can often be seen on the surface of the spots.

Favorable conditions for the development of Didymella fuchsiae include waterlogging in the soil, high relative humidity (above 80%), and poor air circulation around the plant. Fungal spores are easily spread by water droplets, contaminated gardening tools, or through direct contact between infected and healthy plants.

The harmfulness of the disease lies in the disruption of photosynthesis and nutrient transport through the stem. In severe cases, the plant loses its decorative value, drops its foliage, and eventually dies due to the total blockage of the vascular system by necrotic processes.

Control measures include strict adherence to agricultural practices: moderate watering without wetting the leaves, regular ventilation of the area, and timely removal of infected plant parts. For prevention and treatment, fungicides based on copper or systemic agents are used to manage the infection.
